Artist statement
As an artist, Kristina is a painter exploring art materials and their unique material attributes. As a creative practitioner, she focuses on early years education where she is interested in how the interactions a child has with art materials and objects facilitates their learning and sustainable learning outcomes.
Kristina’s core body of work and research has been centred around materials, and how our interactions and relationships with them affect the productions of art objects and art interaction. By working with paint and raw canvas, she enters a process of unlearning her painting practice and exploring an element of a creative agency with every piece. The by-product of this is an ongoing series of paintings which are indexical to her process of making in the studio.
Between the making of ‘Phase 2:1’(2019) and ‘Untitled’ (Child in Residence, 2019), there has been a significant development in Kristina’s practice. These two works presented together marks a shift from studio-based work to situated art practice, where Kristina has begun mirroring her studio practice and interaction with art materials, into learning environments for young children.
With ‘Untitled’ (Child in Residence, 2019) in particular, the final accumulation of marks is to be understood as a collaboration between Kristina and a group of young children. Throughout this piece, you will see a collection of marks and layers. The first layer was made by Kristina with the intention of making a piece. After becoming undecided about the piece, she packed it away with hope to revisit it again in the future. Upon producing Child in Residence* last year, the piece was still left undecided, and it was with this that Kristina decided to see how each young participant could add to the piece unintentionally.
*Child in Residence is set to a be a series of pop up messy play sessions for young children between the ages of 0-5. Each session has been designed to provide young each with space and time to explore art materials in their own experimental ways. We advocate for the agency of learning, child creativity and sustainable learning outcomes, with a keen focus of professional development for early years practitioners.
