Tentacles of Populism
Pencil and Watercolour
2020
Artist Statement | Sedgley | March 2020
My work is an exploration of nature, mythology, surrealism and the human condition. These themes are sometimes combined with a reaction to current events in politics, popular culture and society as a whole.
Although I work in a range of mediums, drawing remains at the heart of everything I create. It’s my way of interpreting the world around me and, in some way, uncovering some kind of truth.
A reaction to the wave of populism, big data and hysteria which floods our social media channels and distorts rational thought and debate. Although the concept for this piece was devised before the Coronavirus pandemic and relates to Trump, climate change, it could also be interpreted as a metaphor for the mass hysteria, panic buying and xenophobia which has ensued since it emerged.
