Artist statement
Presented with endless creative possibilities, I sit, pen poised, ready to make the first mark…suddenly thoughts of self doubt flood my mind…
FEAR OF THE BLANK PAGE!
When I was asked to submit a piece for this exhibition I suddenly found myself struck with terrible creative block, time was against me, nothing would work, sketches were discarded one after the other and the ideas in my head would just not flow onto the page.. the monstrous inner critic, like some b movie creature had once again loomed out of the darkness!
Creating can be a lonely pursuit, thoughts of am I good enough? will anyone like what I am doing? and especially in the age of social media, unfairly comparing oneself with other artists and their journey can really have a negative impact on my creativity.
So in the end that struggle became the focus of my piece, shining a light on that fear and realising it’s not that big scary monster after all… just part of the process to work through.
A struggle I feel will resonate with many others, whatever their creative field may be.
